Folks,

All this talk gets absurd! In what times are you living? Software industry is out of it's infancy. This means that religious and other arguments are thing of the past. For the last 3 years or so I was not asked a single time what tools & systems we use to deliver our products. Our clients include some big shots from the banking industry, online shops, telecom, etc. We even do credit card billing & accounting for one of the major players here in the Netherlands. People ask how fast we can deliver, how much it will cost, how easy is to admin a Xserve - this sort of things.

Last month we got a contract with a major professional telescope manufacturer for a complete robotic telescope software (we had already in the past delivered solution for scheduling of robotic astronomical observations, but now I am talking about hardware drivers, autofocucers, adaptive optics control etc.) It is based 100% on Apple technologies (WO, Cocoa, IOKit...). Only few years ago this would be absolutely unthinkable - for those who never been exposed to this market it is 80% SUN and 20% linux. But this telescope folks were just stunned by what we can do in half year using apple technologies and just signed without further questions.

This happens again and again. The key is not WO or JBoss. The key is to understand that programming in the modern world is as writing and reading - part of everyday life. We did get these project because we have other skills like astronomy, or accounting - not because we use WO or any other technology. But we can have these other skills, because by using WO we can move quickly and have enough time to read. learn, and research other things. And BTW, we are just 7 people - some of them part time. And we all do have private life and families that we do not neglect.

All these does not mean i am not pissed of at Apple at times. My really hate emotions were when Apple start moving from Obj-C to Java. They lost not only so much time, but also the cream of their developer's team. It was completely insane move - as we can see it now, many people are happy not to use Java and still make a nice living out of it.

Anyway, should we move this to wo-talk?

cheers

gt

That is awesome! Your story (and the hundreds of others like it) should be featured relentlessly and aggressively in some form of marketing by Apple. Instead, it will die here in this mailing list where everyone already knows the power of WO. It's ridiculous.

It's worth wondering I think - how much harder would it have been to convince a non-family employer to agree to let you choose WebObjects? You already had credibility with your family. They put there confidence in your ability (rightfully so), not WebObjects. It might have been more of a battle outside of the family business. It shouldn't be. Doesn't have to be.

Also, your wish list would become reality a lot faster, if Apple would create the market momentum to justify a faster development cycle.

Great work on the solution. Good luck! :-)
