I saw Daniel's post about Mono. Sounds interesting. I went and checked out
the site. Looks like it is still a while before it is fully baked though.
While I appreciate the idea of a common language runtime and the ability to
develop in multiple languages. I have seen too many Microsoft technologies
come and go over the years to get a warm fuzzy feeling that they will stick
this one out.
I was at a Developers NDA meeting at Microsoft back in 2001 when they first
pitched the whole Hailstorm initiative and software as a service. Once the
developer community got wind of it - it died. Some of the technologies have
survived but not in their original form.
Anyone remember the history of Visual Basic? VBX Controls ruled the VB world
for almost 3 years, then MSFT forced all of the vendors to rebuild them as
OCX controls. That lasted for a couple of years until they started talking
about .Net. Now all of the vendors are rebuilding around the .Net
frameworks. They have radically changed the whole VB environment since it's
inception. They have basically abandoned all VB6 developers when then went
to .Net. The only option is to upgrade and fix your existing applications.
What about the various flavors of database access technology. Starting with
Jet, ADO, RDO, ADO.NET, and probably a couple of others I have forgotten
about. The APIs are similar (thankfully) but they do radically different
things.
I am convinced that .Net will be around for awhile, I just don't think MSFT
will think twice about jumping ship when it comes up with the next great
idea that they are willing to bet YOUR company on. They are in business to
make money. The best way to keep doing that is constant change at all levels
forcing continual upgrades and support contracts.
