When you buy a box of WO, you get one development license AND one
deployment license.
From what we can tell (you can contact Apple directly for an official
license), the deployment license allows you to deploy on ONE server
machine, as many applications as you want---regardless of whether the
apps are deployed with traditional WO architecture, or as Single
Directory/Tomcat whatever. This is in addition to your dev license
on another machine.
If you need to deploy on two machines, yes, you need to buy another
license. [Except some versions of OSX include an OSX-only deploy
license for some versions of WO.]
Yes, it's odd that the only way to buy licenses is in pairs of one
deploy and one dev in a shrinkwrapped box of WO. But the licenses
are actually quite cheaply priced compared to other similar products.
But yeah, there is a price; sure, if you don't want to pay it, you
can't use WO (legally).

Oh I've got all that set and the deployment works fine, I'm more
concerned about the actual license, I don't want to deploy non
-compliant, but I'm not going to throw another $600 out if it's not
required, this is a small company, (very, I'm the programmer, sales
guy, network engineer & janitor, my wife keeps the books). I have the
Content Switch as a by product of another project, I'm using Fire 100's
because they are $999, rather than than $1999 for the cheapest XServe.
What I really want to know is the licensing, and from the initial
comments, I'm assuming that WO and I will be parting ways very very
soon. $600 in addition to my fees to develop something is going to be
a non-starter for my customers, who are for the most part SOHO
businesses.
Of course, if I'm faced with another $600 outlay, I'll probably rewrite
the WO app as an EJB/JSP app, despite the fact that WO is a better and
more complete technology today :-)

Andy,
Double check that these options are correctly set in your main
project target.
SERVLET_DEPLOY_LICENSE = <your deployment license>
SERVLET_SINGLE_DIR_DEPLOY = YES

Ok, I've got my simple WebObjects application written and I'm happy
with it. I've done all my local testing, and I'm happy with
everything. Now I'm getting ready to deploy it.
I've got the luxury of having a Cisco Content Switch to manage my
load balancing between a couple of application servers, so I would
like to deploy this to my two Sun Fire 100's running Apache and
Tomcat, which I prefer to Sun's Application Server. I've gotten the
application deployed to both and it works flawlessly, however I
currently have one of the boxes turned off because I still can't
figure out the answer to one simple question, and the license is
vague regarding this.
It's clear that you have a Dev and Dep license in each box. The
deployment licensing when used with teh Apple WO Application Server
is crystal clear. I need another WO Retail box.
But...
With a single directory deployment, your license is tied to the war,
and there is no Application Server installation and license. This
would imply that the license is a run-time license tied to the
application, not the application server. I can't find anything in
the license that implicitly discusses the situation regarding the
SSDD deployment options.
What I infer currently is that either, A, the intent of the SSDD
deployment is that it can be deployed without the WO license and is
tied to the Development kit (much like the MS ASP.NET run-time
license is tied to the compiler, not the host), or B, the intent is
that you rebuild the app with a new Deployment license for each and
every licensed deployment.

I'd like to hear from the community how you understand and read this,
because candidly, I'm confused.
