I am actually in the process of finishing up a catalog application for
an tradeshow exhibition company. Basically, I chose to use the file
system. I would be given high resolution files which I made sure
had a consistent naming convention. i.e, product.t.jpg, or product.d. 1.jpg.

I then use Apple's Automator program and Photoshop to resize, rename,
and save for web in particular directories. I then rsync'd these to the web
server.

Finally I would run another script against the web directory to tag these
images to the product in the database.

It is all pretty automated at this point and is working well. And it is my 2ยข
to throw into the idea pool.
