http://www.bugzilla.org

from your list of requirements

- models dependency (concept of bug xx depends on bug xxx, bug xxx blocks on bug xxx)
- groups based permission - different clients see different products, categories for viewing, logging bugs
- built in email support
- horrible butt ugly (BUT very familiar) interface
- web based and runs on OS X, Linux, Solaris etc.
- time estimating per task (perfect for project timelines)

Advance warning - it's a nightmare to install (less of a nightmare on linux perhaps).

But it is very feature rich, used very heavily but a LOT of different companies out there and scales well to multiple projects, many developers.

And it's 100% open source and free.

ps. I may try to put together an OS X installer package for it (if I get some time) which would solve the biggest problem with it - installation.

This is not at all about WO, but I thought this would be a good place to find lots of people who build websites and have the same sort of needs we do.

I'm looking for a basic ticket tracker, where basic is defined as having all the feature we need. :) My needs go something like this:
- models dependency - nothing fancy like MS Project, but just so I can look at my tasks and see that I can't work on Task A until Tasks X and Y have been completed.
- has groups-based permissioning so we can allow clients to log in and create/edit/view tickets.
- sends email so people know when they have new or changed tickets
- has a clean, uncluttered display that impatient programmer types will be willing to use without major coercion.
- is web based and can run on Linux.

Getting fancier, it would be nice, but not essential, if it allowed tasks to have more than one owner and/or more than one parent (ie, multiple tasks waiting for one task to be done). And if it allowed time tracking per task.

I've looked at Basecamp and I know everyone raves about it, but I must be a freak or something because I hated it. I'm trying to use Tasks Pro now, but am running into limitations I'd rather not live with.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

janine
