Dear Friends, thanks for the encouraging help.
I have done the following:
1) Uninstalled XCode 2.1 and installed 2.0, no change resulted in
the problem.
2) Reviewed all that I see in Server Admin with regards to the
Settings pane, I have <Turn Monitor on> checkbox set.
3) Curiously, when you then click on <Running> I get the message:
<http://localhost:xxx could not connect to server localhost>
(I am hiding our special port # for JavaMonitor)
but I can get to JavaMonitor from the URL:
http://216.162.215.196:xxx/cgi-bin/WebObjects/JavaMonitor.woa
4) Thanks to Daniel for pointing out that I did not have the
background flag set in the <wotaskd> terminal line, so now I can
limp along by starting <wotaskd> from terminal.
So, no real solution.
My guess is that there is a naming issue on the server, somehow no
connection between <localhost> and the real IP address of
<216.162.215.196>, but I haven't "stumbled" onto the solution.
I've had similar problems in the past, and come to similar
conclusions. Unfortunately, I don't actually know what I did to
resolve it, but I think it had to do with what particular IP address
you are running under. Does that machine have multiple IP addresses?
What does "uname -a" report? What is in /etc/resolv.conf? Are you
running a DNS server?
Also check in /etc/hostconfig for the HOSTNAME config.
sacha
SiteConfig.xml has:
<SiteConfig type="NSDictionary">
<hostArray type="NSArray">
<element type="NSDictionary">
<type type="NSString">MACOSX</type>
<name type="NSString">216.162.215.196</name>
</element>
</hostArray>
That might be the problem. My laptop has
<hostArray type="NSArray">
<element type="NSDictionary">
<type type="NSString">MACOSX</type>
<name type="NSString">localhost</name>
</element>
</hostArray>
But I am having wotaskd problems of my own...

According to Apple doc <Starting WebObjects Services> you can
start <wotaskd> and <Monitor> automatically from your command
shell editor:
Open /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.wotaskd.plist and
set the Disable key value to false.
Open /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.womonitor.plist and
set the Disable key value to false.
In my plist file I have both values false, JavaMonitor starts
automatically but not <wotaskd>.
From terminal this starts wotaskd
/System/Library/WebObjects/JavaApplications/wotaskd.woa/
wotaskd &
Does anyone know about starting <wotaskd> on 10.4.1 server ?
