I am not sure what you mean by a "forced upgrade" of your xServes or any
of your systems until YOU are ready to upgrade them. And when you do that
I would strongly suggest doing it first on a machine that is not a
production machine, but that is configured exactly like your production
machines.
I still have an old powerbook runing 10.2.8 because I have some
development tools that only run on that. A number of my Web servers are
still on 10.2.8. As long a server does what it is supposed to do, there
is no reason to upgrade it.
The best practice is to plan your updates on your schedule (not just
because the vendor has put out a new version). Do them first on test
servers that match your production servers. Test the heck out of those
upgraded test servers (let them run for a few days or a week). And only
when you are sure you know what is going on when you upgrade, you can
upgrade your production servers.
Once your production servers are upgraded, THEN you can start the process
over for your development environment.
I know we all want to have access to the latest bells and whistles, but
that has to be tempered with the need to protect your production
deployment environment.
