There is a lot of truth in that.

Excluding the missed work time / fees, it costs somewhere in the order of US$5,000 in travel, accommodation and the cost of the WWDC pass to spend this week. I personally find that investment worthwhile in terms of planning my companies strategy in the coming years and for the interaction that I enjoy with the rest of the WO community.

The information that we receive is not just about WO but about Apple's strategy in general and those features of that strategy that Apple needs Developers to support.

On the other hand, much of what Apple discloses to us is only half- baked or just for discussion. I think that Apple listens carefully to what we have to say and modifies / ameliorates its views in some areas and that their somewhat revised views are those that eventually become public. It is not a perfect process by any means. But not that different to dealing with other vendors.

Just view it as 'tacking into the wind' to use a sailing term.

I think that Apple clearly gets a message also when they run a WebObjects session in a room capable of holding around 800 people and almost every seat is taken! That is close to 20% of the people attending WWDC.

other vendors may not be able to deliver products on time, but at least they are able (and willing) to give developers some guidance on future product direction. This secretive crap may well be cut out for the consumer market (yeah - i understand when they don't want to leak the details of the next ipod), but for us core enterprise developers this kind of crap just sucks.

there is little wonder why i am permanently under pressure to switch to a "serious j2ee vendor"....

+1

You've expressed that a lot better than I ever could do.

AFAIK, EVERY ADC Member is already under a NDA.

At LEAST the PAYING ADC members should have IMMEDIATE access to such information.

I REALLY don't want to wait for some marketing guy to finish the press release.

OTOH, those of us who "shelled out the green" on travel, accommodation, time away from work and the e-ticket itself surely have some right to privilege....
