I actually just did this timing comparison at WWDC -- on a MBP, Xcode
takes about 1-2 seconds to open a single project and be up-and-
running and Eclipse takes about 4-5 seconds to be up-and-running with
a SINGLE project in it (these are both "second start" times). The
typical usage of Eclipse is kind of different than Xcode, though, so
in Eclipse it's common to have a LOT of projects open (and thus
startup time suffers as a result) -- for instance, in my workspace,
it's not uncommon that I can have upwards of 50 projects open (wolips
+ wonder + some eclipse plugins + real work stuff + random other
stuff). First start time, Eclipse does take a larger hit (but so
does Xcode), and there is likely NO way Eclipse will ever be as fast
or start as fast as Xcode unless you do something wacky like native
compile the jar files.
However, that said, I hear TextEdit opens REALLY fast on files --
Even faster than Xcode! ;)

I wouldn't describe myself as a "hard core XCode fan"... I simply
won't switch to any java IDE that
makes me wait 3 minutes at startup before letting me do what I
started it to do :-)

Oh yes. The number of hard core XCode fans will certainly stay the
same.

P.S. One final thought. Given that Apple is deprecating the
tools, anyone want to guess how many WO developers at Apple use
Xcode for WebObjects? ;-)
I do ;-)
