Hi Jeffrey,

I started with WO about 2 years ago and I was new to java then albeit I had 20 years of programming experience with non-object-oriented programming languages like Fortran, C, Visual Basic, scripting and the like. I had no mentor, so the initial few months were tough, however I found the following resources invaluable to get up to speed on this excellent productive architecture:

1) It goes without saying, the wise and experienced ones on this mailing list .... absolutely the best, especially the regular contributors on the list ( I won't list them in case I let someone out! )

2) Jumping in and doing some simple WO projects and experiments when trying to figure out how something works and how to use it will build your confidence big time.

3) If object orientation is new, then Head First Design Patterns is awesome and easily digestible without heartburn! Understanding the basic patterns such as Strategy, Template, Observer, etc helps one really understand what the WO frameworks are doing and why it is designed that way making it much easier to integrate with it. Understanding and using Strategy and so on can really make your application more flexible and cut down on the urge to build in too much unnecessary inflexible inheritance into your EOModel and your app. Patterns can make your programming really fun since you are doing less refactoring and more feature adding.

4) Project Wonder is a great resource, even if you initially use it to look at how many of the useful components and classes are designed and integrated into WO .... it broadens your understanding even more about WO and how awesome WO really is.

5) Chuck's book is invaluable and all the WO books are worth getting (except IMHO Jess Feiler's)

6) The various blogs and wo-related sites are invaluable for tutorials and example code too. Remember someone has probably already done something similat what you want to achieve, so Google is your friend.

Just a quick note. I've been a lurker on this list for quite a while under a different email address. I finally joined with this address because I wasn't seeing a lot of traffic that could help me learn WebObjects.

I finally decided Monday to join under my personal address so I could safely post.

i just wanted to thank you all for the helpful replies. I am hoping that by exposing my own ignorance to all of you, it can help others following me. Again, thanks to all of you for bearing with my ignorant questions and posting very informative replies.

I DO have most of the documentation that I can find for WebObjects. I have been pouring over them over the past bit (its actually been close to 6 months). I see a lot of docs that will be useful once the initial learning hurdle is overcome. The closest thing to a true beginner document I have found is the WebObjects for Windows Developers book. I also have the Practical Webobjects book, but again, as others have mentioned, it is not for beginners.

I look forward to Chuck's new book and wish it were ready now. Twould save me much frustration I am sure.

Again, thanks to all of you for your responses and help.

Jeff Pearson
