Seriously, for all the good natured ribbing that goes back and
forth, I, like Chuck and David, believe that Eclipse is currently a
better platform for pure Java development. It is, after all,
created in Java expressly for Java development. But WebObjects is
not pure Java development. It includes WOComponents and EOModels.
The Apple tools (Xcode, EOModeler/Xcode's EOModeling capabilities,
and WOBuilder) form a powerful combination, providing visual
construction capabilities to the visual elements of your project.
They're getting better, but Apple still seems unwilling to provide
the commitment to professional WO developers that would make me
comfortable. Until they do, you are well advised to seek to
understand the underpinnings of these tools for the day that we may
all have to move to some open source solution. That is, learn what
the .wod file does and how the various elements of the WOComponent
interact. Be able to deal with them at the raw text level if you
need to. Learn how EOModeler uses property lists, so if you have to
edit them some day in Eclipse, you'll know how to do it.
It might help to motivate you, after all this discouraging advice,
to know that WO is still the finest enterprise level web
application development tool set out there, bar none, and that
Apple's renewed interest in the tools is serious.

I, like Chuck, also prefer Eclipse, though I might not wish it on
a complete beginner unless I was around to mentor.
Yes, I am also a little hesitant to recommend it at this stage.
You would just trade one source of confusion for another. But it
is something to keep in mind for when you get your feet under you
more solidly and yearn for a better IDE.
