On a similarly OT-note ;-) - I hate captchas. Really, really hate
them. Seriously - captchas were invented somewhere deep in the bovels
of the seventh level of hell along with the ebola virus, Celine Dion
and SOAP. I cannot, for the life of me, understand, why this thing
caught on everywhere - they're a bad solution to a seemingly simple
problem.
On sites I develop, I usually include a text field that requires a
certain value to be entered - and I use a javascript to auto-enter
that text into the field when the page loads, so the user usually
never has to think about it. I know it's not a rock solid solution -
but it does successfully block about 300-400 spam messages a day on my
own blog.
I can understant why huge sites like blogspot or yahoo have to use
captchas, since they're probably targeted by spammers' software
engineering teams, but for small sites, I don't see why captchas
should be required. They should, IMHO, be considered a last resort in
a losing fight.

Greetings,
I can't resist the impulse to jump on my web accessibility soapbox
at this point and recommend that if you insist on using a visual
captcha in your web application, that you also provide an audio
alternative to those using assistive technology such as Apple's
VoiceOver or JAWS from Freedom Scientific.
Obviously screen reading technology is unable to read the graphics
presented in a visual captcha, making it very difficult for screen
reader users to register on your site.
Providing an audio alternative is not always practical, so listing
an email address on your signup form for people requiring some
assistance with the captcha is often a good compromise.
We are only talking about a very small percentage of users who are
likely to visit a given site, but it's still worth a couple of
minutes to consider web accessibility.
I'll keep it brief, but it goes with out saying there is a vast
quantity of information about web accessibility out there, just ask
Google.
Cheers,
Mitch

Subject: captcha ???
Hi All,
Does anyone have a suggestion regarding a free captcha generator,
that works well with WO ? We wouldn't complain at all if there was
some code you could throw our way in regards to implementing it
to. In fact we woudl be most grateful.
Thanks
