If you want WebObjects, but you don't want WebObjects, then the answer is clear:

Cayenne + Tapestry

If you aren't familar with these frameworks, both are heavily inspired by WebObjects.  Cayenne is very similar to EOF - almost all of the EOF concepts have a direct one-to-one correspondence in Cayenne.  A WO developer could be productive in Cayenne in about two days or even less if you start with a WO-like entity template and some helper classes.  Cayenne is so good (and so familar for WO people) that after learning it now I don't think there is any reason for a new (NEW!) project to ever use EOF again.  Cayenne can even be used as just as the ORM part of a WebObjects application if you don't want to abandon WO entirely - it's a simple replacement.  If you would like some things to help you get started I can give you some things.

Tapestry does the html/web side of WO.  I haven't actually used it yet, but the concepts are the same as WO, so it's likely very easy to get going with it.  It has a lot more street-cred. than WO I think.
