Are you saying that you don't get ConfigureNotify and MapNotify events
for some requested visuals?

Yes. I understand the concept and utility of overlay visuals. They are very
useful in many apps. Not a requirement, but certainly useful in avoiding
unnecessary re-rendering.
I was merely trying to find a more detailed description of what, specifically,
you found lacking in Apple's GLX.
