John,
Thanks for the reply.
I hope this will also be read by someone from Apple: Lack of overlays
actually means that a pulldown menu expose event will make millions
vertices redraw in the RGBA TrueColor drawing area (isn't that very,
very expensive). Does someone really have to explicitely ask for a
feature which gets around this? On the other hand all Apple hardware of
nowadays supports overlays and underlays (you know very well how thay
are exploited in native Cocoa), isn't that quite obvious? Isn't it
obvious that most interesting scientific visualization - isn't this
where Apple pretends to take part feeling at home?
No wonder that people didn't ask for overlay visuals - one really has to
have a visualization code writing experience - to even know its proper
name, query commands, glX extensions, visual attributes, with some
working exerience in solving these issues. Other people just know that
some apps work, some don't, no matter how the server capability beyond
it is being called. There is no manufacturer (or programmer) company
which makes an X server for MACOSX which supports overlay visuals.
Apple, can you hear that? Did Apple decide to include X11 just to show
its imperfections? Isn't any correctly implemented feature non-trivial
to do? Please try to accept this as a voice of someone who's trying to
help in good faith.
So, I'll have to stick to my trusty SGI for some more years, which was
not mine, but Apple's choice.
Best Regards,
Stanko

May I please get a straightforward answer from Apple, if the X11
Server release is meant to include OpenGL overlay visual capabilities
(as implemented in libglx libglwm and libglw) and what is the reason
if not?
No, overlay visuals won't be in the next release. No one else has
asked for them, and they aren't trivial to implement correctly. We may
look at adding them for the release after that, but no decision has
been made yet,
John
