Im trying to run the Gnome WM with X11
Ive tried the following to get it to startup Gnome automatically
- replaced quartz-wm with /sw/bin/gnome-wm in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
- created my own copy of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc as ~/.xinitrc with
quartz-wm replaced
Either way, the cursor changes, but I am unable to start up any
xterms and the xterm listed within the xinitrc does not start
_however_
if I comment out quartz-wm and remove my .xinitrc
It will start an xterm wherein I can issue "/sw/bin/gnome-wm &" which
works....
~/.xinitrc doesn't start with much of an environment. You'll need to
set up the path where GNOME can find it's components. ~/.xinitrc
doesn't login, so it doesn't read the .profile. I source mine. Other
options are to change the #!/bin/sh on the first line to be a login
shell of your choice, such as #!/bin/tcsh -l .
