Hi Trevor,

The results of this portscan suggest you have the 10.2 personal firewall active - port 6000 is not listed.

You cannot get xhost/xauth to work unless you open port 6000 on your Mac.

However, ssh -X should still work...

The fact that DISPLAY is not set up correctly at this point suggests several possibilities:

1) The linux machine is not allowing incoming X11 forwarding - check its /etc/sshd_config file for a line that says "X11Forwarding yes".

2) Something happened during set up of the tty that unset DISPLAY - did you get a question during login asking about terminal type? (Probably not, judging from your listing above...)

3) You have something in your init scripts on the linux box which is unsetting DISPLAY.

Can you change your login shell on the linux box, and see if DISPLAY is set as soon as you login, just as you did above?

Did you upgrade to 10.2 recently -maybe to use Apple's X11? (OSX 10.1 does not have a personal firewall, so xauth/xhost would have worked fine.)

Bye!

Adrian

i have never used the apple x11 server under x 10.1, only 10.2.3-4. i have used the fink x11 under 10.1.3-10.2.3 and it worked each time.
*checked on the linux server and X11Forwarding was set to no. i fixed that and restarted the sshd - didn't resolve the issue
*DISPLAY variable is not set on login, thats not a big deal for me, i set it when i login if im going to run an X11 app, otherwise its not needed.
*i have the firewall turned off as the ibook is never directly connected to the internet, and the other users on the network have difficulties telling the difference between the mouse and a foot petal (j/k, but only barely).
I would post a log of whats happening now, however its the same as before. :(
