That's it indeed - thanks. I like Wilfredo Sanchez' setup scripts; this
seems a minor glitch.
I wonder why Terminal sets an environment variable named TERM_PROGRAM,
whilst xterm sets one named TERM? Shouldn't they behave more
consistently?

You are probably using the tcsh startup files in
/usr/share/tcsh/examples. There is a well-known (well, well-known to
everyone except Apple, it seems; in any case they haven't fixed it in
6 months) bug in /usr/share/tcsh/examples/aliases, where this variable
is used without first testing whether it is set.

Where is the TERM_PROGRAM variable supposed to be defined? termcap?
The man page is silent on the issue.
It is set by Terminal.app, but otherwise undefined.
