Well, not "only".  You could also run a X11 vncserver in 8-bit pseudocolor.
Vncserver for X11 is an in-memory X server.  You would then run a vncviewer
on your real 24-bit Truecolor X11 server so you could see your application
running.  It's slow and cumbersome, but it would get you the pseudocolor
visual you want inside of Apple's X11.app.
