I've had various levels of success with ucontrol, depending on the
particular machine and type of keyboard.
It seems to work fairly well with external USB keyboards (like a desktop
machine would have), but has some strange problems with my Titanium G4.
The light appears to be independent of software control. It also
sometimes gets into the wrong state (usually if I sleep when the light
is on), and I have to press it to unstick the control key.
These problems happen as well with non X11 applications.
