Subject: :0.0 and DHCP
I use DHCP for IP address at home and work.
I had X running at work, closed the lid, went home.
Reconnected, started working, tried to launch X apps.
Apps complained they couldn't open display :0.0.
The problem seems to be that with my new IP address, X
thought the old :0.0 was a different display, no doubt
because OSX decides to rename my machine when I get a
new IP. I presume the apps were looking for:
workname:0.0
but finding that :0.0 belonged to homename.
Suggested fixes? Possibly worth addressing in the
final version of X11?
I had a similar problem going from DHCP to offline, presumably because
my hostname changed to blahblah.local. and that host is not in my
.Xauthority? I see that localhost is, and perhaps I could have worked
around using that, but I didn't figure that out until I quit and
restarted X. Clearly this is a bug that will annoy many people, since
all other Apple apps are carefully designed to deal gracefully with
your ip address changing. I hope Apple will test X11 with a changing
IP...
