Greetings
I have successfully used fink to install abiword on my OS X 10.2.3 Mac G4. Abiword starts up and runs just fine in Apple's X11. But one thing I'd like to be able to do is to switch it from "Insert" mode to "Overtype" mode. I've asked on the abiword mailing list, and they told me to "press the 'Insert' key".
Oops! I don't have one of those on my Apple keyboard! :)
I've also asked on the fink mailing list, and have gotten no reply.
One piece of advice I got from an abiword list subscriber was to see if I can use the xmodmap command to remap an existing key to Insert. I want to assign the F15 key to act as an Insert key in X11. I did this in xterm:
Find F15's keycode:
[me:~] me% xmodmap -pk | grep F15
121 0xffcc (F15)
[me:~] me%
So, the keycode for F15 is 121. (Right?)
Then I did:
[me:~] me% xmodmap -e "keycode 121 = Insert"
[me:~] me% xmodmap -pk | grep Insert
121 0xff63 (Insert)
[me:~] me%
So keycode 121 should now be assigned to Insert, right? But it doesn't work - abiword doesn't switch to overtype mode when I hit the F15 key.
I'm pretty much a unix newbie, so I'm probably missing something simple, but can anyone out there give me some pointers on emulating or assigning an Insert key that I can use in Apple X11 so I can switch abiword to Overtype mode? (Or might this be an abiword problem?)
Any help is appreciated!
P.S. Is there any way to search the archives of this mailing list? It isn't listed on the Apple mailing list search engine page at <http://search.lists.apple.com/> .
