A year or more ago, well before Apple announced their X11 work,
anecdotal evidence was that a *lot* of academic, scientific, and
engineering users were bringing Macs into settings they'd never
been seen in before and making their unix apps work the third
party X servers that were available. Settings where in the past
many users had a PC for "office productivity applications" and a
unix workstation for their "real work". That's a significant
new market for Apple. Maybe more important, it's a market that
has a lot of influence on the broader market: people tend to ask
their scientifically literate, technically savvy friends for
computer advice.
In the past year or so I haven't heard _anyone_ around MIT suggest
anything but a Mac as "the computer for mom".
