my suspicion is that this is related to pseudo terminals, and xterm not
being able to allocate one. But we did not change xterm in this release
(actually, we've never touched xterm), so it is very strange that it
has started happening now.
one workaround may be to create a Terminal.app window, then close it. I
think this should leave a pty that xterm can open. Also, if you feel
like recompiling xterm, this patch may help:
[demime 0.98b removed an attachment of type application/octet-stream which had a name of xterm-patch-0]
