Martin,
You're right, I forgot that the Gimp usually does not send PostScript to
the printer queue because of its internal print drivers.
I can also send raw PostScript files directly to the "second" printer
queue via "lpr" from the Mac with the USB printer, from my Linux
computer, and from my Powerbook OS X. I'm not sure where the PostScript
gets converted to the HP inkjet printer control language. I think that I
probably installed Gimp-print before I saw the hint about the second
printer queue. After the print spooling started working, I didn't
investigate exactly how it works.
The important point is that one has to have two printer queues for the
same printer: one for Mac OS X printing and one for Unix PostScript and
other printing. To print PostScript to a non-PostScript printer, you
must have a PostScript renderer, such as (ESP-) GhostScript.
Cheers,
++Eric

I'm not using Abiword, but I do use Gimp. I also use the system of
defining a second printer for Postscript printing (and also printing
from my Linux computer to a USB inkjet on the Mac). I followed these
hints:

Did you actually try this for printing postscript files on the Mac? I
mean without using some other driver or filter on the windows or linux
computer? If this works, I start believing in miracles.
The hints are about sharing with Windows, but the second printer
definition also works for Linux and "Unix" programs on the Mac,
including X11 programs like the Gimp.
The gimp has an extensive set of printer drivers that evolved into
gimp-print. It knows how to print to hp deskjets. The hints you
mentioned consist in sending the raw output of the print function to
the printer. If the program sends a postscript file like AbiWord does,
I would be very surprised if the inkjet printer knew how to print it.
