: I'm sorry Eugene but what you are saying above is ridiculous. If
: someone makes the statement: "I am using X11 on Mac OS X", then the
: next obvious question is "Which implementation are you using?".
If the statement is made anywhere, then you would be correct in asking
for the specific implementation. However, if the statement is made on
*this* mailing list, the implementation *is* Apple's "X11 on Mac OS X".
This list's purpose is to support Apple's X11 implementation. It is not
this list's purpose to support other X Window implementations. And I'm
pretty sure that everyone on this list already understands this rule.
: There are probably just as many people still running XonX as there
: are running Apple's new betas. And many of those now using Apple's
: implementation were running some other implemenation before
: (obviously).
I agree with both of these statements.
: Wrongly refering to Apple's X server as 'X11' only serves to confuse
: people who are new to the X window system.
Those new to the X Window System are using Apple's X11 implementation.
If they have questions about other X Window implementations, they are
free to ask *elsewhere*. Again, this list's purpose is to support
Apple's X11 implementation.
: I was just pointing out a misconception. I assume you must be new to
: this list as comparisons between XonX and Apple's X server have often
: been made here. For example 'XonX behaves a certain way, and Apple's X
: server behaves another' or 'a certain application worked with XonX but
: won't with Apple's X server'. Things like that.
In general, most folks who bring up XonX are trying to get X apps to
behave with X11 as they do with XonX. Sometimes someone might ask how
to make a feature in X11 work in XonX. They might get some help, or get
directed to darwinos-users, darwin-development, or another forum.
Besides, people do distinguish between the two implementations by
calling them either X11 or XonX. I've played with the X Window System
for over a decade, and I've never heard of the term "X11" to refer to
the X Window System until Apple's implementation came out.
