As for better xterms, have you tried Terminal.app? I much prefer it
over xterm, though obviously it can't be used from a remote machine.
I like Terminal.app, but I find it slower than a snail. In my case,
running a
ssh session in a 80x100 terminal. It somehow introduces a really high
latency
feeling and sometimes even puts up the spinner for no apparent reason.
It's definitely not the connection. I started using xterm instead,
but cut
and paste is annoying and I run into a bug (filed with ADC) when using
curses
apps.
So, for now I use the xterm since its problems are acceptable.
Perhaps I
should download rxvt...
Things like this are always a matter of preference obviously ( vi or
emacs, GNU emacs or xemacs, etc... ) but as far as windowed terminal
applications are concerned Konsole is probably my favourite.
Why? It supports colour, multiple languages, multiple sessions in a
single window, multiple preference configurations which can be selected
from a menu, and allows access to all of its features from a context (
pop up ) menu, in addition to the features which Terminal.app and xterm
support. Some of it's other features are probably not relevant when X
is run in a rootless mode under Quartz, things like pseudo
transparency, but even off of its native platform it's still quite
cool. In fact as a KPart component, it can even be embedded in other
applications, a purpose for which many other KDE applications do use it.
If you're using fink ( http://fink.sourceforge.net ) or DarwinPorts (
http://www.opendarwin.org ), it should be in kdebase I think. If you
aren't using a package distribution then it may be possible to download
the source for console by itself ( check http://www.kde.org ), although
you will need at least the packages for QT3 and kdelibs in order to
build it.
Eterm is very pretty but sadly seems to have difficulty with some
curses based programs. GNOME Terminal, or Multiterminal are other
options, the latter providing many of the same features as Konsole,
although without the antialiased text.
Just some thoughts to get you started with...
Daniel
