Hi Rich,
I haven't read your preceding column, so sorry if I was a bit out of place with my comments.
When I read the draft of your article, it seemed like you were writing for beginners, not developers.

Why would it be useful to a beginner?
Don't underestimate Macintosh users, they might be beginners with Apple's X11,
but they learn very quickly and that's about the third question you're going to get.

Rich, I don't know what a different window manager can do for you.
But, for many beginners, it's exciting to know they can use a different window-manager
besides quartz-wm. They all want to try different possibilities.

Beginners asked often how to start and place an application from the ~/.xinitrc file:
/sw/bin/xemacs -geometry 70x27+88+40 &
/sw/bin/gvim -geometry 70x22+687+40 &
multi-gnome-terminal --geometry 65x30+687+500 &

It sounds like you haven't used Fink yourself at all.
I understand then, it will be difficult to recommend something you never used.
What I have heard, it's only praise for Fink and the Fink-developers.
Being a beginner myself, it was thanks to Fink that I could install more than 1,000 packages.
And from my experience, 80% of users of Apple's X11 are using Fink to install packages.

Sao
