I haven't read your preceding column, so sorry if I was a bit out of

When I read the draft of your article, it seemed like you were writing
for beginners, not developers.
The MacTech audience is largely made up of Macintosh developers, many
of whom have no Unix background. Part of the charter of my column is
to bring these folks up to speed on Unix philosophy, scripting, etc.
1- Recommend the installation of 'X11 for Mac OS X Public Beta SDK'.
This might be useful for MacTech readers, most of whom are developers.
Why would it be useful to a beginner?
Don't underestimate Macintosh users, they might be beginners with
Apple's X11, but they learn very quickly and that's about the third
question you're going to get.
I've been pushing friends and family members towards Macs for years,
with a fair amount of success. I don't see any of them doing X11
development. SOME Mac users want to program, but (IMHO) most do not.
Rich, I don't know what a different window manager can do for you.
But, for many beginners, it's exciting to know they can use a different
window-manager besides quartz-wm. They all want to try different
possibilities.
I think the issue here comes down to objectives. If the user wants to
have a true "X11 experience", s/he will want to try out different
window managers, etc. If s/he just wants to run X11 apps in the OSX
environment, quartz-wm and Terminal are just fine. I'll try to make
this point.
It sounds like you haven't used Fink yourself at all.
I understand then, it will be difficult to recommend something you never used.
Both true, but I can still mention it again.
