I am aware of this. I had alreaday added this line both to my cshrc and
to root's. (Actually, I created one for root in root's home). I also
manually added /sbin to root's path in the same way.

The fink installation instructions include an instruction to add a line
"source /sw/bin/init.csh" to your .cshrc . These are good instructions
for many users, who are using the default shell tcsh and who don't
already have either a .cshrc or a .tcshrc, but they may not work for
everyone. (There is a corresponding ". /sw/bin/init.sh" recommendation
for bash users.)
The /sw/bin/init.(c)sh files not only set your path properly for fink,
but also set other environment variables as needed. If you are an
advanced Unix user, you'll need to look at how this interacts with your
existing setup.
Note that there is a mechanism by which individual fink packages may
place additional scripts in a location that is read /sw/bin/init.(c)sh,
so your problems would not necessarily be solved by duplicating the
functionality of the script rather than sourcing it directly (which
some folks have tried).
I'm not sure exactly what you mean here, but I haven't tried to
duplicate the functionality because I wouldn't know where to begin! :)
Thanks,
