In an earlier email you mentioned using FinkCommander.
I've never used it, so I'm making an educated guess here.

what the heck does this mean? what should I do? my path contains all of

The complaint is about 'root's PATH' not yours. So I
speculate that FinkCommander is executing commands as
root rather than your account. And unless you've gone
out of your way to mess with root's path, the goodies
in /sw won't be found. Moreover, as Tim commented,
messing with root's path is probably something to
avoid.
As Tim suggested, try using apt-get, dselect, or fink.
'dselect' is a terminal interface to fink which is
similar in concept to FinkCommander. It won't have the
friendly user experience that a typical Mac app offers,
but it does list packages available and indicate which
ones are installed and that sort of thing.
Hope that helps.
