In an earlier email you mentioned using FinkCommander.
I've never used it, so I'm making an educated guess here.
fair enough...

ok, so I tried to install xemacs via fink. I selected the binary

what the heck does this mean? what should I do? my path contains all

The complaint is about 'root's PATH' not yours. So I
speculate that FinkCommander is executing commands as
root rather than your account. And unless you've gone
out of your way to mess with root's path, the goodies
in /sw won't be found. Moreover, as Tim commented,
messing with root's path is probably something to
avoid.
I presume you're correct in how it works, and I _have in fact messed
about with root's path (carefully). I haven't seen Tim's comment yet.
But, what confuses me is that the scripts etc that fink is complaining
about not being in my path _are in fact in my path (verified with
"which"). So that's really confusing me!
sudo apt-get install xemacs
ah. here's Tim's message.
Well, lo and behold.. that works!!! why doesn't fink commander work
then? I would _really like fink commander to work!
I presume that I should be able to use fink, dselect, and fink
commander pretty much interchangeably...? (though not simultaneously!
:) )
Thanks,
markian
