Might be so. I'm fairly used to *nix-systems after 4-5 years with
Linux but I never had the need to get into the details of issues like this.

/etc/hosts:
----8<-----
[snip of text...]
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
----8<-----

Shouldn't the system recoqnize (sp?) localhost and resolve it on its own?

I don't.

I can launch OO.org by using the following script from the prompt (or
entering it by hand) in an xterm:
----8<-----
#! /sw/bin/bash
/Applications/Opensource/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/program/soffice "$@" &
----8<-----
It might be so that this is a SOO.org problem and not a X11.app
problem. SOO.org might add the localhost on its own, but it should
still resolve...

I wouldn't be thinking of using anything else then ssh for connecting
to remote hosts! I'm far too paranoid for that! :-)
