I don't think you have a problem with authority. You have a problem
with names.
Might be so. I'm fairly used to *nix-systems after 4-5 years with
Linux but I never had the need to get into the details of issues like
this.
Most likely your problem is because localhost does not resolve.
/etc/hosts:
----8<-----
[snip of text...]
You snipped out:
# Note that this file is consulted when the system is running in
single-user
# mode. At other times this information is handled by lookupd. By
default,
# lookupd gets information from NetInfo, so this file will not be
consulted
# unless you have changed lookupd's configuration.
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
----8<-----
localhost is not handled in any special way by the network (contrary
to popular belief) and unless the DNS server you connect to has
properly created a localhost namespace, it is pretty useless.
Shouldn't the system recoqnize (sp?) localhost and resolve it on its
own?
One might think. On a powerbook, each time you change networks,
/etc/resolv.conf gets rewritten, and it does not (by default) use
/etc/hosts (although apparently the comment in /etc/hosts is a lie
because:
[ptw@chautauqua ptw 07:47:32]$ lookupd -d
lookupd version 272.1 (root 2002.11.12 12:48:01 UTC)
Enter command name, "help", or "quit" to exit
> hostWithName: localhost
Dictionary: "FF: host localhost"
_lookup_agent: FFAgent
_lookup_validation: /etc/hosts 1052427686
ip_address: 127.0.0.1
ipv6_address: ::1
name: localhost chautauqua.spoon-hill.callitrope.com
+ Category: host
+ Time to live: 43200
+ Age: 0 (expires in 43200 seconds)
+ Negative: No
+ Cache hits: 0
+ Retain count: 6
).
OTOH, it's not clear to me that X clients use lookupd to resolve their
display. When I am online, dig will resolve localhost by querying my
correctly configured DNS server (dig does not use lookupd), but when
offline, dig will return non-existent for localhost (unless I manually
change resolve.conf to search /etc/hosts, but if I do, next time I go
online, resolv.conf will be overwritten).
My conclusion is, that although lookupd will resolve localhost, X
clients are not using lookupd.
