What sorts of applications (other than the
gimp-because-its-cheaper-than-photoshop) are people
using X11 for? I've switched to ox X from linux, and other than some
specific konqueror features
and cervisia cvs tool, I've found much nicer native substitutes.
I work in HP-UX development at HP in Nashua, NH (the former
Compaq/DEC Tru64 site). I do sysadmin stuff on a flock of HP-UX and
Tru64 UNIX boxes. Apple's X11 is the "right tool at the right time"
for everything I do, which usually involves running various apps on
HP-UX or T64 systems with the display redirected to my Mac. Some of
the things I use on a daily basis include:
XEmacs
HP CommandView SDM (to administer RAID arrays)
SAM (System AdMin tool for HPUX)
HP OpenView OmniBack backup administration tool
Xterm
DECterm (from the T64 boxes, because its VTxxx emulation is top-notch)
DTterm (from either T64 or HP-UX)
dxadvfs (X-based AdvFS admin tool)
ClearCase visual merge, diff tools
dxkerneltuner (T64 kernel-tuning tool)
There are probably at least half a dozen more that I use
occasionally, but that's the bulk of what I use it for. I am SO glad
that Apple has released a good-performing X11 server for Aqua.
Regards,
John Francini
