On any standard Unix sysstem, "rm" wipes the files with no chance of
recovery. On OS X, you could always take these drastic steps:
1. unplug all power (do not do a normal shutdown)
2. reboot off of an external volume and run a file recovery app
3. hope for the best
Assuming you are running HFS+, right?
