X11 is version 0.3. Actually the less that did not work was in
/sw/bin/. I removed it and now my sysitem version 10.2.6 automatically
uses the other less in /usr/bin. I did not suspect there may be two of
them! thanks. Do you think the installation may have caused other
problems along these lines?

This one is due to a separation of libncurses from libsystem around
10.2. Are you seeing this in xterm or in terminal?

Not sure about this one, but I'll bet they're the same problem.
The problem you are having is due to a mix of executables from
different installs of Mac OS X. What version are you running? What is
the result of 'type less' (or 'which less' if you are using csh/tcsh
instead of sh/bash)? What version of X11 did you install?
