thanks Justin!
X11 is version 0.3. Actually the less that did not work was in
/sw/bin/. I removed it and now my sysitem version 10.2.6 automatically
uses the other less in /usr/bin. I did not suspect there may be two of
them! thanks. Do you think the installation may have caused other
problems along these lines?
You have run into the primary problem with the 'external' install
schemes dealing with non-Apple versions of programs that Apple ships.
You need to be very thoughtful about what you install, and how you set
up your system, to avoid this. Both Fink (/sw) and DarwinPorts (/opt)
can cause problems if their paths are automatically included (e.g., in
your or the system's startup shell scripts - the ones that set PATH for
the shell being started).
The pros and cons of doing this can be debated ad nauseum, but in the
end, you (the one who installs and manages the system) have to know
what you are doing, and what is installed where. I use packages from
both schemes without significant problem, but if I get odd results, I
always check my PATH variable to see what is being executed.
Regards,
Justin
