When I run X11 Beta 3 on 10.2.8, xterm -fa Monaco creates an xterm

Running X11 1.0 on 10.3.3, xterm -fa Monaco creates an xterm window
with text that does not look like that in Terminal.app.
Why is this?
The TrueType bytecode interpreter has been turned off by default in
XFree86,
because Apple hold some patents in the US that make interpreting that
bytecode without their permission illegal. See
http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=666 , and the link on that
page to
the FreeType project.
To my knowledge, Apple haven't expressed a position on whether it's
legal to
turn on the bytecode interpreter when XFree86 is running on Mac OS.
I have made some progress. This is my solution.
I use Monaco as the font in both Terminal.app and in an X11.app xterm
window. However, unlike under Jaguar, under Panther the font is
displayed differently in the two terminal windows. If I create a file
called '.fonts.conf' in my home directory with the following content.
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<!-- ~/.fonts.conf for per-user font configuration -->
<fontconfig>
<match target="pattern" name="family">
<test qual="any" name="family">
<string>Monaco</string>
</test>
<edit name="hinting" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit name="rgba" mode="assign">
<const>rgb</const>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
the fonts in the windows are now more similar, but still not exactly
the same.
The first part of my .fonts.conf turns off the XFree86 hinting.
The second part turns on sub-pixel sampling which looks good on my LCD
screen.
I don't know why this works.
