Thanks all, I was able to fire up xdm on my mac and provide an x11
window manager to exceed. There were some minor glitches, but worked
as expected.

If the remote system is config'd to allow remote xdm (gdm if a gnome
linux system)
sessions, then you can simply run another instance of the installed X
server on the
OS X system (I use Apple's X11 on 10.3.3) on another screen as:
X :1 -query remote-host -once
Since the Apple X server is rootless, the screen will be a bit busy,
but
the remote host's wm will be used for its windows where as the quartz
wm
is used for local X windows.
The -once kills the X server on :1 after logging out of the remote
host.
Without the -once, the xdm login box will appear for another login. To
escape from this situation, manually kill the X server running on :1.
Works for me.
