Years before there was X, Enter on the TT keyboards I first saw it on was where the LineFeed key had been and sent the VT (Vertical Tab) code, no Carriage Return. But I think the paper moved forward one line. On a CRT (a few years later) the cursor would just index down one line.



Still, you should be able to map the Enter to Return for the applications you want.

It's fair that they send different keycodes. That's as it should be, as keycodes are supposed to correspond to different physical keys.

But the two keycodes should map to the same keysym.  After all, Enter
and Return mean the same thing to most people and should to most
applications.

Luckily, this is easily achieved with xmodmap, as someone demonstrated
earlier.
