Here are some observations I have made, that may or may not be
relevant:
- The default xterm that comes up when I start X11.app has no PATH or
any
environment variables set. It doesn't even recognize the "ls" command.
You need to sort out your shell initialization files. Do you use tcsh or
bash (or something else)?
- Therefore, all my attempts to use X11 have been from Terminal.app
Is your DISPLAY environment variable set in the shell you run in
Terminal.app?
- When I ssh or telnet to flagfish, then invoke vi, it warns:
"xterm-color: Unknown terminal type
I don't know what kind of terminal you are on - all I have is
'xterm-color'.
[Using open mode]"
flagfish' termcap or terminfo database doesn't know about xterm-color.
I suggest you ask the admin to install an appropriate entry. If he/she
is unwilling or unable to do this, you'll have to tweak your shell
initialization files on flagfish to modify the TERM environment variable
appropriately.
- DISPLAY is not set on flagfish.
As above -- is it even set on your local machine?
- When I set DISPLAY manually, and attempt to connect, I get:
flagfish% Xlib: connection to "#.#.#.#:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
There will be absolutely no point in setting it manually. If ssh is
doing
forwarding, it *will* set it automatically.
Try connecting with "ssh -v"; then show us the output.
Cheers,
Nick
