We had a discussion on this list a while ago about this kind of problem.
I found that the X11 server can get confused when it is connected to a
new network. It seems to be when the "hostname" changes and not the IP
address.
I have been able to avoid the problems by starting X11 with it either
not connected to a network or connected to my home "local" network. That
way the "hostname" command returns "mycomputer.local" and that is what
X11 uses for its security. When I put the laptop to sleep and take it to
work, I make sure to wake it up before connecting it to the Ethernet
network. That keeps the "hostname" set to "mycomputer.local" instead of
changing it to the hostname of my work network, and it keeps X11 from
getting confused. If you are using Airport to connect to a network where
hostnames are assigned then you might have to turn it off before putting
the laptop to sleep to prevent it from grabbing a new hostname when it
wakes up.
I hope this helps, and I hope the Apple folks consider finding a way to
make this work better.
Cheers,
++Eric

Well, I DO have the same problem.
Just now, I tried to start emacs21 and got this message:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
"""
emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xauth' program to verify that you have the proper
authorization information needed to connect the X server.
An insecure way to solve the problem may be to use `xhost'.

- at the same time an X11 application (lyx) that I had been running
continuously for a few days is still connected to X11 as if nothing
happened.
The issue has come up on the fink-users list a while ago, and after
observing this several more times, my feeling is that it doesn't just
have to do with putting the laptop to sleep. Instead, it seems to me
that this happens when the computer is disconnected from one
network and connected to a new one. The IP address changes, and
maybe that's what X11 doesn't like.
What about you - are you connecting to multiple networks during the
day?
