Which application do you launch after connecting (I assume, perhaps
incorrectly, that just
ssh -X username@remotehostIP works)?
You should receive an announcement such as "Welcome to Darwin" or
something upon success.
After that, at the prompt, type the name of an X11 application that is
likely installed on the remote machine.
I have an X11 app I installed on my remote machine called "nedit".
After I've connected to my remote machine, i can launch nedit by simply
typing "nedit" (and then hitting return). a window pops up allowing me
to edit text documents on my remote machine, exactly as if I were
running nedit while sitting in front of my remote machine.
I also have OpenOffice.org installed on my remote machine. It's a
little trickier to launch it, but the principle is the same.
I get a window that pops open, allowing me to edit OpenOffice.org (or
even MS Word) documents as if I were sitting in front of the remote
machine.
working with X11 in this way, is much faster than using VNC, but VNC
allows one user to see and use the entire OSX gui remotely.
I hope that is helpful. :)

Subject: Trouble viewing X-windows via SSH & X11

Hi Mac OSX gurus!
I am really stuck and would be very appreciative of any advice
I am using X11 on a Mac iBook OSX 10.3.4 (either tcsh or bash) and
connecting via ssh to a G5 (bash) which also has X11 on it, and runs
OSX
10.3.4. From the G5 directly, the Xwindows in the application work
fine.
The problem is when I want to have the Xwindows appear on the iBook via
ssh.
I have tried :
ssh with and without -X option
Q: How do I forward remote X displays to my Mac?
A: The best (and safest) way is to simply ssh -X user@remotehost from
the
initial xterm. X forwarding and your DISPLAY environment variable on
the
remote host will automatically be set. Remote host must have X
Forwarding
enabled in ssh_config file. MacOSX does not enable this by default.
Thank you very much.
