Hi Mac OSX gurus!
I am really stuck and would be very appreciative of any advice
I am using X11 on a Mac iBook OSX 10.3.4 (either tcsh or bash) and
connecting via ssh to a G5 (bash) which also has X11 on it, and runs OSX
10.3.4. From the G5 directly, the Xwindows in the application work fine.
The problem is when I want to have the Xwindows appear on the iBook via
ssh.
I have tried :
on the iBook : dna.rsmas.miami.edu
xhost +genomics.rsmas.miami.edu
xhost genomics.rsmas.miami.edu
ssh'ing to the G5 thru Terminal and thru X11
ssh with and without -X option
Sharing Preferences : Turned on/off remote desktop (forgot exact name)
on the G5: genomics.rsmas.miami.edu
DISPLAY=dna.rsmas.miami.edu:0;export DISPLAY
DISPLAY=dna.rsmas.miami.edu:0.0;export DISPLAY
Had X11 running and also not running when the iBook ssh is initiated
editing the /etc/sshd_config AND /etc/ssh_config files to
G5 sshd_config: (comments '#' I now think are the problem?)
#X11Forwarding yes
#X11DisplayOffset 10
#X11UseLocalhost yes
G5 ssh_config:
#ForwardX11 yes
Turned on/off G5 System Preferences>Sharing>Remote Login to restart sshd
And still I get no X-windows being displayed on my iBook:
The following is from the X11 xterm on my iBook (dna.rsmas.miami.edu)
% ssh -X genomics -l biotools
>
> biotools@genomics's password:
> Welcome to Darwin!
> dlc-genomics:~ biotools$ cd CONSED/
> dlc-genomics:~/CONSED biotools$ cd standard/edit_dir/
> dlc-genomics:~/CONSED/standard/edit_dir biotools$ ../../consed_mac
> Darwin Version: 7.4.0
> no ~/.consedrc file so no user resources will be used--that's ok
> no ./.consedrc file so no project-specific resources--that's ok
> Error: Can't open display:
>
>
> dlc-genomics:~/CONSED/standard/edit_dir biotools$
After I did the DISPLAY=dna.rsmas.miami.edu;export DISPLAY, then the error
was
Error:Can't open display:dna.rsmas.miami.edu:0
I am not sure which are the correct options to be messing with, and which
should be left alone. Should I reset the sshd_config *and* ssh_config
files? Should I use XDarwin, not X11? I am happy to reset everything and
begin again if someone knows what may be wrong.
Please provide any insight you can.
After much internet searching, I think that editing the remote (G5) files
is probably my problem. Should I edit ssh_config or sshd_config?
I have read both :
http://tinyurl.com/tbkf
versus the FAQ for this forum which states :
Q: How do I forward remote X displays to my Mac?
A: The best (and safest) way is to simply ssh -X user@remotehost from the
initial xterm. X forwarding and your DISPLAY environment variable on the
remote host will automatically be set. Remote host must have X Forwarding
enabled in ssh_config file. MacOSX does not enable this by default.
Thank you very much.
