You want to create an ~/.Xresources file. Here is some sample contents

I have a related question. I just got a 30-inch display so I would
like to start my "xterm" with a larger font. I looked through the
"xterm" man page, but it didn't list a resource that was clearly
related to changing the font size.
Yes it does. In fact there are two ways to do it. You can use the
traditional X11 way to do it, which is to specify the following
resources:
font
which is the default font and
font1 to font6
which are the alternatives you get in the menu. You need to remember
that a font in X11 parlance is not just the name of the font; it can be
a full specification including size, pitch, resolution, etc etc.
That's why there's no separate entry for size. The way I do this is to
run the command xfontsel to find the font I want, and then copy that
into my Xresources file. For example, the largest standard fixed font
it usually:
-misc-fixed-*-*-*-*-*-200-*-*-*-*-*-*
or something like that. That's probably what font6 is set to already
(actually it's set to that font's alternative name of 10x20)
The second way which is only supported on xterm if it has TrueType
support compiled into it (which is the case on OS X, but not normally
the case on other UNIX variants) is to set the resources:
faceName
and
faceSize
The (dis)advantage of using this method is that the font will be
antialiased,
whereas the traditional UNIX fonts will not be.
A useful command for finding all the resources as they are currently
set for an application is appres, for example in this case:
appres xterm
will list the current settings for all the resources xterm knows about
(be warned: there are a lot! This is UNIX and you can change just
about everything in xterm's user interface!)
