It sounds to me like she may have a more difficult problem that will
require running the Disk Utility program, since she already rebooted.
The volume directory may be somewhat damaged, having lost track of the
files but not freed the space.
As a last resort after all simple steps have failed:
Repairing the volume requires having an original OS X installation CDROM
or DVD, booting off that disk (by holding the "c" button as the machine
starts), and then selecting Disk Utility from the menu (no pressing the
install button!). Then select the volume and press the repair button.
Cheers,
++Eric

Is an application open that may have been using the files? They are
not actually deleted until they are not linked to a file system, and
no program has them opened.
Just in case some program in the background has them open, you may
want to reboot, then empty the trash.

Hello:
I am the daughter, who as my father has kindly explained, has the
problem with the mac and remaining space on the HD.
• First off I connected the 250GB Lacie Portable Disk Drive,
which my mac recognized with little effort.
• Then I selected, Clicked & Dragged a sample 3GB Image
Folder into the Lacie.
• Once I was able to see that that was working, I took the
test folder and dropped it into the trash, and deleted it. No problem.
• I did the same to the main 52GB image folder, and 22 hours
later the transfer was complete. Only this time the HD image files
were gone from the "HD Pictures" directory before I could drop them
into the Trash! And my usable space is still embarrassingly
minuscule. Yes, I am beyond the 80% recommended on the HD, which is
why I saved and purchased the Lacie...
• I am able to access the files from the new drive.
• I have tried to find the files on the HD, but cannot locate
them, and still I am showing less than 4 GB on the HD even after
several reboots.
Any ideas?
Help would be gratefully appreciated, as I have at least 500M of
images to offload and need to be able to work them...
Thank you for all the input.
I remain,
the daughter,
ginette
