Well, what do you know, I did not realize until just now that XDarwin was there in the X11R6/bin directory of the Xorg build -- and it works (well, XDarwinStartup works, except for not running my .xinitrc). But it does not solve my display issue, unfortunately, which suggests to me that this is a video driver issue on my Powerbook rather than an X11 issue....
Thanks for the tips on building Xorg -- did you build it on 10.4? I ran into problems there, but maybe the more recent CVS snapshot would work out better with gcc 4.0. There were header files missing from the 10.4 /usr/include (like ansi.h) that I copied over from my archived 10.3.9 usr/include directory. Even then, there were errors in make World.

As another poster mentioned, the 6.8.2 release fails to build but does not tell you so, basically resulting in a partial installation that does not work.

If it was not built from Xorg source, then it is just a dummy with no server behind it (well, it is even if you did build it from Xorg source, but there is a real server that it calls). If you moved/deleted the X11.pkg installed /usr/X11R6, then X11.app will not work until a complete build of Xorg takes place (unless you put back the old /usr/X11R6).
