Allen,

Outside of X (xdarwin) the keyboard is fine - the problem is in only in X.
Looking at the XDarwin prefs there is a place to select a keymapping file -
"USA.keymapping" is listed here but the is no file anywhere on my laptop
called USA.keymapping, in fact the /System/Libraries/Keyboards directory was
absent. This appears to be a common problem with mac laptops.

I found a USA.keymapping file on xdarwin.org, installed that in the correct
directory and I have some keyboard functionality now.

However, I don't have a USA keyboard - I have a UK one and I cannot find a
UK.keymapping file on the web.

Still I now have * which makes X usable - the £ symbol is mapping to # which
is pretty convenient.

Thanks for the pointers - if anyone knows where to get a UK.keymapping please
let me know,

Cheers,

SA
