Unless you have a problem getting KDE to work you should try Apple's
X11. It will map what ever keyboard your system is using. I cannot
locate any keyboard layouts on my system in panther or tiger. They
are not in /System/Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/Roman.bundle/ where one
would think they'd be. XDarwin will not use XFree86 next version, you
will have to recompile stuff or switch to Apple's X11 anyway.

Allen,
Outside of X (xdarwin) the keyboard is fine - the problem is in
only in X.
Looking at the XDarwin prefs there is a place to select a
keymapping file -
"USA.keymapping" is listed here but the is no file anywhere on my
laptop
called USA.keymapping, in fact the /System/Libraries/Keyboards
directory was
absent. This appears to be a common problem with mac laptops.
I found a USA.keymapping file on xdarwin.org, installed that in the
correct
directory and I have some keyboard functionality now.
However, I don't have a USA keyboard - I have a UK one and I cannot
find a
UK.keymapping file on the web.
Still I now have * which makes X usable - the £ symbol is mapping
to # which
is pretty convenient.
Thanks for the pointers - if anyone knows where to get a
UK.keymapping please
let me know,
Cheers,
SA

I assume you can type those keys in non X11 apps. In X11 preferences
is "Use the system keyboard layout" checked? Is the correct format
for your loacality chosen in your International Preference Pane? Does
this happen if you log in as another user. If not then what is in
your .xinitrc, .bashprofile or.cshrc say if you have them.

Dear All,
I had not one single reply to this query - is it something so
stupid that no
one thought it worthwhile replying? If so please just let me know
what to do.
Otherwise any ideas?
I cannot type *, £, + and several other keys in X which is
extremely annoying!
Thanks,
SA

Hi,
does anyone have an x keymap for an apple powerbook G12? - I
have KDE
working on it finally but I can't use all the keys and need to
remap the
keyboard to make it usable.
If there is another way of doing this please let me know,
Thanks,
SA
